A flood alert has been issued for a section of the River Ribble as torrential rain continues in and around Preston.

The Environment Agency has said flooding is possible on a section of the River Ribble and River Darwen.

The alert – currently the lowest level alert issued by the agency – covers the Ribble from Samlesbury down to Higher Walton. The flood alert comes as the Met Office has an amber warning in place for heavy rain through to 12noon on Thursday (23 May).

It also includes the River Darwen for the section near Higher Walton and Walton-le-Dale.

A statement from the Environment Agency says: “River levels are forecast to rise on the River Ribble and River Darwen due to heavy rainfall.

“Further rainfall is forecast overnight. We will continue to monitor levels closely.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

“Plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.”

The alert was issued at 4.50pm on Wednesday 22 May.

A flood alert is also in place for the River Lostock and River Yarrow around Whittle-le-Woods, Leyland, Croston and into Lostock Hall and Bamber Bridge.
