The weather warning in place for Preston has been upgraded to amber – which means that flooding is now ‘likely’ to affect the area, according to the Met Office.

Preston, and much of the North of England, is already under a yellow weather warning – the lowest level available to the Met Office – which was issued yesterday and is in place from just after midnight today (22 May) until 6am tomorrow (23 May).

But Preston and the wider North West will be under an amber warning from midday today until midday tomorrow, albeit Preston is at the edge of the warning.

The warning states that rain will be ‘persistent and heavy’ this afternoon and that flooding is likely as a result.

According to the Met Office, many places within the warning area will see 30-40mm of rain, with high ground areas seeing 70-90 mm.

The advice from the Met Office is that you should prepare to avoid travelling by road, that you shouldn’t drive through deep water and to call 999 if you are affecting by fast-flowing water.

Andy Page, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The area of low pressure developing in the southern North Sea will push a band of heavy rain north and west across the UK.

“Areas exposed to the strengthening northerly winds are most likely to see the highest rainfall amounts, though exact details regarding the track of the low and thus where we might see the highest rainfall totals remains uncertain. Warnings are likely to be updated as more details emerge, and it is important therefore, that people to keep an eye on the forecast.”
