Preston day-by-day weather forecast as cold snap intensifies

Preston remains in the grip of January’s icy chill as winter well and truly sets in.

After what was a very mild November and December the city is experiencing a prolonged period of cold weather.

The Met Office has a warning for snow and ice in force from Tuesday to Thursday and temperatures continue to tumble as low as -5 on Wednesday.

Here’s a look ahead for the weather over the next few days from the BBC Weather/MeteoGroup forecast.

Sunday (14 January)
Afternoon – A still afternoon with sunny intervals and temperatures up at four degrees

Evening – Temperatures drop away to freezing by 9pm and a clear night ahead

Monday (15 January)
Morning – Below freezing at -1 for the school run until the sun really breaks through from 9am onwards

Afternoon – Highs of two degrees but a crisp, sunny winters day with a gentle breeze picking up around lunchtime

Evening – Dropping away to -2 overnight and some cloud cover starting to come in

Tuesday (16 January)
Morning – Expect the day to start with sleet showers and a moderate breeze which builds to nearly 20mph by lunchtime

Afternoon – Highs of four degrees and lots of sleety rain coming in

Evening – A milder night as temperatures stay at two to three degrees and the snow warning stays in force

Wednesday (17 January)
Morning – After that sleet the temperatures drop again and expect there to be an icy morning as it is -2 degrees at 9am

Afternoon – Highs of two degrees at lunchtime as the sun breaks through but back to freezing by 4pm

Evening – Temperatures fall away for the coldest night of the week, dropping as low as -5 degrees and colder in rural areas

Thursday (18 January)
Morning – Another bitterly cold morning, with temperatures -2 throughout the morning and getting above freezing between 10am and 11am

Afternoon – A sunny afternoon and a gentle breeze with temperatures down to barely above freezing by 4pm

Evening – Some cloud comes in but another cold night at 1 degrees and the weather warning for snow and ice subsides

Friday (19 January)
Morning – Expect some sleety rain to set in for the morning with temperatures barely above freezing

Afternoon – Highs of five degrees, but the dampness remains with showers throughout the afternoon

Evening – The rain stops around 7pm for a clearer evening and temperatures of two degrees
