A weather warning for snow and ice will be in place for three days in Preston and much of the North West in the coming week.
The Met Office has issued the yellow weather warning for snow and ice. It will be in place from midnight on Tuesday (January 16) until 11.59am on the same day. Following this, a separate yellow weather warning for snow is in place from midnight on Wednesday until 11.59am on Thursday.
It comes as the cold weather alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency was extended until Thursday (January 18).

The warnings state that 2-5cm of snow is possible over a few hours of some places in the North West. Preston is covered by both warnings, along with the entirety of Lancashire. Higher volumes of snow are likely over higher ground.
It also warns that there is likely to be delays to travel and the potential for injury due slippery surfaces caused by the cold weather.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Snow showers will continue to feed inland early on Tuesday morning across northern and western Scotland, parts of Wales and northwest England where 2-5 cm of snow is possible over a few hours in some places.
“During the day, an area of more organised rain, sleet and snow is likely to move east with further showers following. There is still some uncertainty in the track of more prolonged snow, and it is possible that at lower elevations across Wales and northern England, this could turn to rain for a time. However, there is a chance some places could see 5-10 cm perhaps 20 cm of snow, particularly across the northern half of Scotland and over higher ground elsewhere.”
