A Muslim procession through the streets of Fishwick stopped traffic during Sunday (3 September) afternoon.
Marking the first month of the Islamic calendar the parade saw Shia Muslims strip topless and make their way down Fishwick Parade, Samuel Street and Fishwick Road.
The annual event is called the Muharram and saw dozens of men take part.
It marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala when Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, was killed.
The Muharram is a key event in the Shia Muslim calendar.
Processions include flagellation of backs and chests – so some of the pictures below some readers may find disturbing.
The road closures were in place from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday.

In previous years the procession has gone along New Hall Lane, but this year it was kept to a number of side streets.
