Ribble Steam Railway and Museum near Preston Docks is up for a Lancashire Tourism Award.

The venue’s Autumn Steam Gala has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Best Small Event category for 2024.

Held at the popular attraction in Chain Caul Road, the event in late September saw five steam locomotives operating the trains, with two of them newly restored.

Visitors could also enjoy demonstration goods trains, special teas onboard and railway workshops, plus the children’s play area and award-winning museum and cafe.

The event will compete against Burnley Canal Festival, Chorley Flower Show, Folk, Roots and Maritime Festival, Spot On Festival, The Dukes Park Show – Alice in Wonderland, and Thornton Rocks.

A spokesperson for organisers Marketing Lancashire said: “The list showcases the enormous range and appeal of events taking place in Lancashire over the course of a year; attracting visitors throughout the seasons and making a significant contribution to the local visitor economy.

“From music and dance festivals, steam train and 1940s experiences, to theatre and flower shows, events that have taken place on canals, in town centres and even in a shopping village, together have delivered an unforgettable year for hundreds of thousands of visitors.”

The finalists will now be interviewed, along with the other finalists already named in the competition, by a judging panel of tourism, leisure and industry-related experts.

Other Preston-based finalists include Aven, 1842 and Ivory Tower, and Haighton Manor.
