A latest edition of the Good Beer Guide has named 34 pubs across Preston, South Ribble and Chorley for getting a good quality pint in.
Put together by the Central Lancashire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale the pubs are featured as part of CAMRA’s UK-wide book.
Published for more than 50 years the annual guide is seen as the go-to place for ale drinkers to find out where has a good pint.
Here’s all the pubs, ordered by area A-Z, who made this year’s guide:
Adlington (2)
Old Post Office, 163 Chorley Road, PR6 9LP
A conversion from a former post office, this cosy micropub is owned by Escape Brewery and features their beers on the 4 handpumps with additional craft beers from other small breweries.
Spinners Arms (Bottom Spinners), 23 Church Street, PR7 4EX.
A traditional village pub, this year celebrating 23 consecutive years in the guide. Up to 7 cask ales are served.
Bamber Bridge (1)
Beer Box, Unit 3, 143 Station Road, PR5 6LA
Another beer guide regular, this micropub is at the north end of the main street. Offering 5 cask ales, mainly from smaller local breweries.
Chorley (8)
Ben’s Tap & Bottleshop, 2 Market Place, PR7 1DA
The taproom for the Chorley based brewery, up to 6 of their own beers are served on hand pump, with real cider and craft beers also available.
Bob Inn, 24 Market Place, PR7 1DA
A tiny bar housed in a market unit, serving three changing cask ales. The new market food hall – 1498 at the Markets provides welcome additional seating.
Flat Iron,21 Cleveland Street, PR7 1BH
A traditional town-centre pub with sports TV during the day and a lively nighttime scene. 5 hand pumps serve a range of beers (mainly from Yorkshire breweries) plus a real cider.
Malt ‘n’ Hops, 50-52 Friday Street, PR6 0AA
A mainstay of the real ale scene in Chorley for over 30 years, this friendly local has 9 hand pumps, serving a range of styles from Lancashire and Yorkshire breweries.
Masons Arms,98 Harper’s Lane, PR6 0HU
A mile from the town centre, this locals pub has 5 hand pumps, serving mainly pale and lower gravity beers to suit local preferences. Popular for live sport TV.
Riley’s Taproom & Wine Bar, 4 Cleveland Street, PR7 1BH
Predominantly a craft beer outlet with 3 hand pumps serving a changing selection of beer. Complimented by good wines and great food.
Shepherds’ Hall Ale House & Victoria Rooms, 67 Chapel Street, PR7 1BS
Chorley’s first micropub, the ‘Sheps’ has expanded into the adjacent building, so is now anything but micro. 5 cask ales are served, in varying styles and from a wide range of breweries. This year it celebrates 10 consecutive years in the GBG.
Sir Henry Tate, New Market Street, PR7 1DB
A Wetherspoons pub, with 10 cask ales and everything else you expect from this chain.
Coppull (1)
Wheatsheaf, Spendmore Lane, PR7 4NY
A community local with a smart modern interior. 3 changing cask beers are served, often from local breweries.
Croston (1)
Wheatsheaf, Town Road, PR26 9RA
Right in the centre of the village, this pub has been a guide regular for many years. Good food and a friendly atmosphere is complemented by up to 5 changing real ales.

Heath Charnock/Rivington (3)
Bay Horse, Babylon Lane, PR6 9ER
A traditional multi-roomed pub with a bowling green overlooking the Rivington hills. Up to 4 cask ales are available, mainly from Yorkshire breweries.
Rivington Brewing Co. Tap Room, Home Farm, Horobin Lane, PR6 9HE
Remotely situated in converted farm buildings this pub has unrivalled views over the Rivington hills. Mainly serving beers from their own on-site brewery. With up to 3 cask beers and 15 keg lines, there will be something for everyone.
Yew Tree, Dill Hall Brow, PR6 9HA
An isolated pub with a long-standing reputation for food. Two changing cask ales are served, usually from Blackedge Brewery in nearby Horwich.
Leyland (2)
Golden Tap Ale House, 1 Chapel Brow, PR25 3NH
A cosy micropub serving up to six changing cask ales sourced from far and wide, plus a good selection of craft beers.
Market Ale House, 33 Hough Lane, PR25 2SB
The first micropub in the branch area and now extended into the adjoining unit. Up to six changing cask ales are served and this year it celebrates 10 consecutive years in the GBG.
Lostock Hall (1)
Lostock Ale, 7 Hope Terrace, PR5 5RU
A community focussed pub with up to six cask ales and a selection of craft beers.
Penwortham (1)
Tap & Vine, 69 Liverpool Road, PR1 9XD
Another micropub, but with a smart almost wine-bar feel. Up to 4 cask ales are available, often from lesser known breweries.
Preston (13)
Black Horse, 166 Friargate, PR1 2EJ
A magnificent Victorian Grade II listed pub with a selection of beer and cider to match. Up to 10 cask ales and 20+ ciders are available and this pub is the Regional Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year.

Chain House Brewing Co.Taproom, 139-141 Market Street West, PR1 2HB
Comprising one large unit incorporating both the bar and the brewery, there are 2 cask beers and 12 keg lines serving a wide selection of beers with a leaning towards the more crafty end of the market.
Crafty Beggars Ale House, 284 Garstang Road, PR2 9RX
A large micropub with four cask and five keg lines, selling beer mainly from north-west breweries.
Fulwood & Broughton Cricket Club, Garstang Road, PR3 5JE
This club is friendly and welcoming to non-members and serves up to 3 cask ales from a wide range of northern breweries.
Guild Ale House, 56 Lancaster Road, PR1 1DD
A bit large to be truly a micropub, with two distinct downstairs areas and a further room upstairs, the Guild has been at the forefront of the Preston beers scene since it opened in 2016. Up to seven changing cask ales are available.
Moorbrook,370 North Road, PR1 1RU
The pub where the local CAMRA branch started back in 1973. Traditional in appearance, with eight cask ales and additional craft lines, this is the third of the pubs celebrating 10 consecutive years in the GBG.
(New) Continental, South Meadow Lane, PR1 8JP
With its riverside location and large garden, this is an ideal city pub for a summer’s day. Up to seven cask beers are served and the pub is renowned for live music and theatre in the adjacent events space.
Old Vic, 79 Fishergate, PR1 2UH
Right opposite the railway station, this pub can get very busy. Good value food in addition to up to changing cask ales makes this an ideal stopover when waiting for a train.
Orchard, Earl Street, PR1 2JA
Sister pub to the Guild Ale House, this tiny market bar serves 3 cask ales and a selection of craft beers.
Plug & Taps,32 Lune Street, PR1 2NN
Another micropub, but where the focus is on craft beers. 4 cask and 10 keg lines serve an ever changing selection of beers from a wide range of breweries.
Tap End, 450 Blackpool Road, PR2 1HX
A smart, out-of-town micropub, with up to 4 changing cask beers in a variety of styles.
Vinyl Tap,28 Adelphi Street, PR1 7BE
A pub with the focus on music, with a wide selection of vinyl records played on request. Up to 5 cask ales are served.
Winckley Street Ale House, 88 Winckley Street, PR1 2AA
A cosy micropub, with 4 cask and 10 keg lines, this is the pub to find the unexpected, with beers sourced from all over, and often featuring unusual styles and stronger beers.
Wheelton (1)
Red Lion, Blackburn Road, BB7 9SP
In the centre of the village, this friendly local has 8 cask lines and serves a range of styles from some of the best known independent breweries.
The CAMRA Good Beer Guide is now on sale, priced £16.99, from the CAMRA website or from many bookshops. This year’s guide includes two different covers, featuring the Woolpack from Emmerdale and the Rover’s Return from Corrie.
