A Fulwood mum, whose concern for children’s safety on Black Bull Lane following an accident triggered the start of a petition, expressed her delight at hearing about new safety measures being considered.
Linzi Fairclough, whose daughter now goes to Our Lady’s Catholic High School, was considering her daughter’s high school options at the time of setting up the petition.
An accident which took place at the junction of Queens Drive, which is between Fulwood Academy and Queen’s Drive Primary School, was one of numerous seen in recent years that inspired Linzi to take action.

Linzi Fairclough told Blog Preston: “She’s [my daughter] not going to Fulwood Academy and Our Ladies was always the first option, but I did think because of where we live, if she was walking to school, she will have to cross around that area anyway so if there’s measures in place for a crossing that the children can use then it’s definitely going to make a difference isn’t it?”
The busy road is due to see new speed humps, pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes and the relocation of a bus stop.
Linzi said: “Some of the residents were concerned about just speed humps, but if a crossing is going into place, it’s absolutely fantastic because even though the lollipop man is still there, when you go around the corner people are still driving really fast down there.
“It just shows when the community comes together, they can make a difference can’t they?”

Lancashire County Council’s road safety measures are focused on ‘calming traffic’ with several bus cushion road humps and a pelican crossing to make it easier for people to cross the road.
Earlier this month, a spokesperson for Lancashire County Council, said: “We’ve written to residents, schools, and businesses on and around Black Bull Lane to ask for their feedback on our initial proposals to improve safety in the vicinity of the leisure centre and the two schools.”
The council is due to hold a formal consultation later in the year where feedback from residents regarding plans will be taken into consideration.
