Preston and Lancashire thunderstorm warning from Sunday afternoon

Heavy rain is expected during Sunday afternoon as the heatwave begins to break.

The Met Office has issued a thunderstorm warning for Preston and Lancashire.

Running from 2pm on Sunday (9 September) to midnight on Sunday there’s the risk of ‘flooding for homes and businesses’ and disruption on travel networks.

The city has been basking in nearly 30-degree heat for the last week but the weather is expected to turn as the heatwave subsides.

A heat-health alert is currently at the amber level for the North West of England, issued by the UK Health Protection Agency, because of the continued temperature level.

Saturday is expected to be a settled and sunny day in Preston with temperatures reaching a high of 25 degrees and 17 degrees overnight. Preston is expected to avoid the thunderstorms which are due to strike more central parts of England during the Saturday.

The city saw a foggy start to the weekend as mist continues to build overnight due to the sudden movement from warmth to cooler temperatures.

Sunday morning is expected to be sunny before thunderstorms arrive throughout the afternoon and Sunday evening will see light rain as the intensity of the storms subsides.

Temperatures next week are expected to drop down to 18 to 19 degrees.
