A heatwave alert has been put in place for Preston and Lancashire as the late summer warmth continues.

The UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office have a heat-health alert in place.

An amber alert for warm weather is in force from 12noon on Tuesday (5 September) through to 9pm on Sunday (10 September).

The amber alert says there is significant risks for the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures.

Temperatures in Preston are expected to reach 30 degrees on Thursday and overnight temperatures are remaining in the high teens into the weekend.

The NHS in Lancashire and South Cumbria is urging people to remain sensible during the period of hot weather.

Dr Peter Gregory, associate medical director for NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria ICB, said: “A lot of people will have been disappointed with the lack of sunny days this summer, so they will be keen to make the most of this warmer weather while they can.

“Heat-related ailments, including severe sunburn, heat exhaustion and sun and heat stroke can be extremely serious and often require medical attention. We therefore urge people to plan ahead when venturing outdoors by having plenty of water with you and checking that you have enough sunblock.

“People must avoid leaving children or vulnerable people exposed to high temperatures or strong sunlight for prolonged periods of time, whether that is outside or inside a car – and be mindful that shaded areas often disappear as the day progresses.”

The heatwave is due to subside from the weekend.

Mark Sidaway from the Met Office : “A cold front will begin to influence things from the northwest ahead of the weekend, bringing temperatures down and an increasing chance of rain for those in the west of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“There’s still a large degree of uncertainty on the exact timing of this front, and there’s a chance that those further south in the UK could keep some higher than average temperatures through much of the weekend, perhaps even into the start of next week, though even this will be a step down from the peak that we’ll see in mid-week.”
