Lancashire County Council has been awarded just over £2.4m to support victims of domestic abuse.

The funding, which has been provided by the government, means the county council can continue to support people in secure and safe accommodation.

This money will fund domestic abuse refuges, and it will also fund targeted work including support for people from ethnic minority communities, children and people with complex needs in secure and safe accommodation.

The funding has been made available following the introduction of the Government’s revised Domestic Abuse Bill, which will be given Royal assent later this month.

The Bill includes a raft of amendments that will ensure better protection for victims of domestic abuse and help to clamp down on the perpetrators of abuse.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “We very much welcome this funding, which will help us to stabilise and continue to provide the excellent levels of support we offer for domestic abuse victims in Lancashire.

“The funding will support the refuges and other services we contract to protect victims of all types of domestic abuse needing safe accommodation.

“To be able to feel safe in your own home is something a lot of us take for granted. However, many domestic abuse victims feel scared and vulnerable every single day in their own home. This has been especially so during the pandemic.

“This funding will help us provide vital services that make such a difference to their lives now and in the future.”
