Preston and South Ribble’s latest coronavirus cases for second weekend of lockdown 2

As Preston prepares to enter its second full week of the national lockdown here’s a look at the number of new Covid-19 cases.

The city’s coronavirus infection rate has remained within England’s top 30 since August and new case numbers appear to show a slowing in the confirmed cases.

Preston saw 83 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday (14 November) and 53 on Sunday (15 November). The Sunday figure represents one of Preston’s lowest daily increases in a fortnight.

South Ribble’s new confirmed coronavirus cases were 44 for Saturday and 26 for Sunday.

The borough now has the second-lowest Covid-19 infection rate in Lancashire.

Up to and including October 30 there have been 159 coronavirus-related deaths in Preston and 103 in South Ribble.

Normal life by next winter?

One of the team behind the Covid-19 vaccine, developed by BioNTech and Pfizer, said he believes ‘normal life’ would return by winter 2021.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Shaw on BBC One during Sunday morning, Professor Ugur Sahin said he was confident the vaccine would transmission between people would be cut dramatically by the vaccine.

The government has ordered 10million doses of the BioNTech vaccine to be delivered before the end of the year.

Prof Sahin said all immunisation programmes needed to be completed before Autumn 2021 to ensure a third wave of Covid-19 does not take place in the colder months of the year.

43,000 people took part in the tests for the Covid-19 vaccine and studies show it could prevent more than 90 per cent of people from contracting Covid-19.
