A pub which has been at the heart of life in Penwortham for half a century has been toasting this weekend.

The Sir Tom Finney pub in Central Drive, Penwortham, is marking its opening in 1975.

It became the ‘Sir’ Finney pub once the Preston North England legend received a knighthood in 1998.

Marking 50 years of pouring pints since the day Sir Tom himself opened the doors on 20 March 1975.

Landlady Jen Williams said: “How many pints have been poured in that time, I wonder.

“How many birthdays, christenings, and other significant days have been celebrated here.

“This pub has seen me through the best and worse days of my life and I know I’m not the only one to be able to say that, it is a super special place, it’s definitely ‘not just a pub’.

“Yes the building has been here for fifty years, but it isn’t the building that makes the pub, it’s every single person that’s ever worked here, and that’s ever called it their local. So cheers to fifty years and cheers to all our Finney Family past, present and those looking down from above.”

The pub is also encouraging anyone with memories of time spent in the Sir Tom to share their pictures and memories on social media. They’ve shared the time Jordan North of at that time Rock FM broadcast live during an England international game.

To mark the 50th anniversary year the pub is putting together a float to take part in this year’s Penwortham Gala on the weekend of Saturday 14 and 15 June.
