Blackpool Road’s Tesco store has now put mobility scooters in store after more than a month’s wait.

The store has now confirmed that scooters are ready to use in the shop but those who need them have had to wait almost a month for them.

A Tesco spokesperson has confirmed the scooters came into store shortly before Christmas.

They told Blog Preston: “Our Preston Superstore now has an electric mobility scooter in place for customers. We apologise for the short delay.”

Meanwhile, Mark Newman who found himself unable to shop when the store first opened in November, has said he is “happy” with the progress.

He approached Blog Preston when he attempted to visit the superstore in late November in the week it opened but found he had to go elsewhere due to the lack of assistance scooters.

He said: “I am happy that Tesco has decided to have in store mobility scooters for people like me and others who have trouble walking.

“It’s amazing me that disabled people are overlooked and we have to push to be treated like everybody else who is not disabled and to be seen and not dismissed it is hard enough for disabled people but we will keep on fighting to be treated like able-bodied people.”

Chief Executive of Disability Equality North West Mel Close said: “Most of the disabled people we spoke to felt quite strongly that Tesco should be providing mobility scooters to enable disabled people with limited mobility to shop there.

“The scooters also help Tesco to meet their duties under the Equality Act, it’s appalling that the store opened without scooters being available.”
