A Preston couple have grown what could be the first crop of tomatoes originating from the Docks.
The story began in December 2022 when Victoria and Ste Whiley were out walking and noticed a tomato plant growing near the Green Frog.
Victoria said: “At first we were sceptical, thinking it must be something else – how on earth could a tomato plant firstly survive the howling gales of the Docks, let alone bear fruit?
“However it very much was… We have since figured it must have been the remants of someone’s Green Frog sandwich tossed away that had enabled it to develop.”
Returning to the site a few days later, Victoria and Ste found the plant undisturbed.
Victoria continued: “We took a couple of tomatoes – one was to taste and the other was to cut open for the seeds.
“Ste – who is definitely not very green fingered – read up about drying out the seeds for planting.
“Earlier this year we planted them in our back yard and low and behold we have now got our first crop of Preston Docks tomatoes! Last souvenir of the Green Frog? Power of nature and patience indeed.”
