A Cottam grandad has completed a 66-mile cycle from Media City in Salford to Blackpool Tower to raise £385 for Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Cottam’s Michael Riding, 68, raised funds to thank the charity for helping his daughter, Clare Coupe, who is undergoing treatment at Rosemere Cancer Centre.

Michael enlisted the help of his friends, Alan Groves, 73, of Blackpool, and Preston City Council councillor David Walker, who represents Sharoe Green Ward, to accompany him on the trip.

Michael said: “Alan cycles with Cleveleys Road Club, but neither David nor I could be classed as cyclists, so for us, it was tough going.

“We trained, but I got cramp in Warton that just wouldn’t go, so I am very grateful to Alan and David for getting me to the finish line and everyone who sponsored us.”

Clare, of Hoghton, who is married to Charles and mum to five-year-old Hugo, was diagnosed with breast cancer last Christmas. Since then, she has undergone surgery and chemotherapy and is partway through a course of radiotherapy treatment.

Michael is married to Gwyneth and is dad to Matthew, who lives in Amsterdam with his wife, Chloe, and his sons, Freddie, 5, and Thomas, 2.

Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring cancer treatments and services to cancer patients treated at Rosemere Cancer Centre. It is the specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The charity funds equipment, research, training and other cancer services and therapies that the NHS cannot afford to make cancer journeys effective, comfortable and stress-free.
