An employee who works at Amazon’s Delivery Station as a Shift Manager in Leyland has received a special festive surprise in recognition of her outstanding efforts in supporting the community.Advertisement
Sophie Atherton (25) has been nominated for an Amazon Star award in recognition of her voluntary work in the Preston community, which includes raising awareness for the shoebox appeal in partnership with the Preston Community Hub and organising a food collection for the SLEAP Homeless charity.
The Amazon Star programme, now in its second year, is a UK-wide Amazon competition seeking to recognise and reward Amazon employees who make an outstanding contribution to their community through volunteering, fundraising and using their unique skills and talents to help others.
Sophie was nominated by her colleagues for her outstanding community work with local charities. Alongside her role as Shift Manager, Sophie is the Community Ambassador for the Leyland delivery station and volunteers her time to help charities and organisations in Preston and the surrounding areas.
Being a community ambassador for Amazon means Sophie can build relationships with organisations and drive campaigns that she is passionate about with the help of Amazon’s resources.
With the aim of doing something every month, in December, Sophie connected with the Preston Community Hub and helped to drive its shoebox campaign. Amazon employees donated small gifts to make up a shoebox of gifts for vulnerable children and teenagers in the community. Sophie also secured a donation from Amazon’s community team to help purchase larger gifts before delivering them to the Hub.
Sophie’s work in the community means she is in with a chance of winning one of three Dream Boxes – the top prize awarded as part of the programme. A Dream Box is a special delivery, worth £2,000, containing a top prize to honour Amazon’s community heroes. Sophie will find out if she has won a Dream Box in the coming weeks.
Sophie said: “During my time as a Community Ambassador with Amazon, we’ve done something every month to support a charity. In December, for example, we collected food items for SLEAP and have been promoting the shoebox appeal to support children at Christmas.
“It’s great that I’m supported in this role by my team at Amazon. The time and resource that Amazon puts into the community, whether it’s purchasing goods or delivering items, is one of my favourite things about working at the company.”
