The fire, which is thought to have been started by a disposable barbecue, is affecting approximately 5km of moorland.

Preston firefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service are on the scene along with crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

A statement from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Please avoid the area, particularly trails along the Witton Weaver’s Way. Road closures are in place including Turton Road. Travelling to the scene by vehicle, bike or on foot, may block access for emergency vehicles and hamper our response.

“If you’re nearby and affected by smoke, stay indoors and keep your windows and doors closed.”
