Thunderstorm pictured as it breaks over Preston during the early hours

Preston was awoken during the early hours by a dazzling thunderstorm.

As temperatures reached up to 30 degrees in city and a sweltering night unfolded lightning forked over the city.

Sonia Bashir was up with her camera to capture the dramatic picture above.

The Met Office had issued a thunderstorm warning for the city which remains in force until 9am on Wednesday (24 July).

The city is due to see highs of 23 degrees during Wednesdays as temperatures drop slightly and a gentle breeze blows in.
