The M6 at Preston was closed late on Sunday evening through until the early hours of Monday morning.
Reports came in of a vehicle facing the wrong-way on the motorway at Junction 31A heading northbound.
Highways England shut the motorway from Junction 31 (Tickled Trout) to Junction 32 (Broughton) from around 10.30pm on Sunday (11 November).
A number of cars were thought to be involved.
The motorway reopened around 5.30am on Monday (12 November) and traffic is flowing normally.
No details have been released on the vehicles involved or the injuries of those involved at this stage.
