Another great little addition to the culinary scene in Preston – the Sushi Salad Noodle Bar on Guildhall Street. A superb little eating place offering quality freshly made sushi and noodles everyday, to eat in or take away.

The home style sushi shop has been delighting customers for a good few months now including myself. I’ve made several visits and never been disappointed.

Sushi is available in Preston at places like M&S and Boots. Even the Wilkinson’s store on Friargate has it. However, you just can’t beat freshly made. There is no YO! Sushi in the city (for now anyway) the but Sushi Salad Noodle Bar is a nice, if tiny alternative

I popped in for something different for lunch. It’s a bit of a squeeze in there when busy but managed to get a good selection in a tray. I also tried the Chicken Katsu. Very popular that day, they had almost run out.

The golden deep-fried Chicken Katsu was served on steamed rice, a Japanese mild curry sauce garnished with green leaves and pickles (£4.50). Absolutely delicious. Freshly cooked strips of chicken with cripsy skin bathed in slightly spicy but wonderful katsu sauce. Plenty of rice and topped with some really tasty pickled bit and bobs. I will have to ask what these were. Highly recommended. Be prepared to wait while its cooked though.

Also tried Duck Uramaki, Spicy Smoked Samon Gunkan and Spicy Prawn sushi plus a little vegetable roll. My choice of sauce wasTeriyaki plus the usual wasabi, on the side, treated with great respect.

The sushi were good sized, tidy and very fresh. Certainly tasty little morsels. Far, far better than the shop bought ones. I found 6 enough for lunch. Using the freely provided chopsticks they can take a little while to eat (down to my chopstick skills probably).

They have loads of sushi choices and the Gunkan, Maki and Uramaki (inside out roll) sushi come in a wide range of ingredients including, tuna, salmon (spiced, smoked or poached) tempura, squid, egg and chicken plus load of veggie options. There is even Parma Ham and Pear for the more adventurous. You can buy 2 pieces of sushi varying in price from £1.50 to £2.00. Good choice of sauces as well.

Great value are the selection boxes that come in 6 (£3.50), 8 (£4.50) or 10 (£5.50)

The staff are very friendly and helpful and will happily describe each sushi dish and the how to construct your selection box. But the tiny place can very busy. Last time I went the queue was out of the door. Often new sushi dishes sell out immediately. They experiment with new combinations so it’s a great idea to visit often to see what new delights they have. Their sushi range normally changes everyday.

You may have to wait for some dishes such as the hot noodles and katsu so be prepared (take a newspaper).

While I was there I overheard a ‘regular’ sitting at a table who said ‘it’s great that a little independent like this is so popular. It’s good for Preston.’ I second that. I like this place, they do offer a healthy choice and a great lunchtime alternative. The best sushi in the area. Would be great if they got a licence to serve sake though.
