Umberto’s renowned chippy on Watery Lane in Preston opened yesterday and despite minimal publicity (apart from maybe on this blog) the crowds returned for the popular £1.50 lunchtime special.
The well loved chip shop close to Preston Docks was devastated by fire and smoke damage back in August. Customers both near and far eagerly awaited the re-opening. Although there was no fanfare or special celeb cutting red tape nonsense – I have been told Mr Umberto doesn’t go in for that kind of thing – chip craving Prestonian’s packed the place out on Monday.
Flames and acrid smoke ruined the floor and the chip fryers forcing a complete refit. Mr Umberto did manage to save a few of his family photographs and mementos which can still be seen on display inside.
Now it’s back to normal open for business with Mr Umberto sat in the back room at all hours waiting for customers (although he had nipped out for a bit when I was there). The door only closes due to bad weather.
