A final goodbye to the Fox and Grapes pub. I took the picture above shortly before all the signs were removed.
Although the old Fox and Grapes boozer shut back in October it is only now that the building has been refurbished into a smart new ’boutique’ bar called Beachcomber.
Based on Fox Street, the Fox and Grapes was described as ‘mans pub’ what a real pub should look and feel like. The typical back street local had a great double act with the Exchange pub just down the road. I remember back in the day it had a great comedy night called For Fox’s Sake to try and pull in the punters.
I also remember one landlord, George Spencer, had run the pub for 40 years. Quite something when you think of that today.
The new Beachcomber bar that has replaced the Fox and Grapes has been created by thirty-year-old Richard Powell who also runs the nearby Kuckoo also on Fox Street. It’s a funky 60s-inspired retro cocktail and opened at the weekend. We will post a story about the new bar just as soon as we get inside and have a drink.
As another of Preston’s old watering holes has gone forever I thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts. What are your memories of the Fox and Grapes? Doyou have any stories to tell? Let us know in the comments below.
