People in the North West have been urged to use water wisely as Preston’s prolonged period of dry weather continues.
Reservoir levels are at 69% – compared to 90% at the same time last year – meaning United Utilities has ramped up its own activities to manage resources.
Advice includes taking one minute less in the shower and doing one fewer load of washing as significant savings of water.

Given the spike in water bills in 2025, residents would be forgiven for pointing out they have already made changes.
Matt Hemmings, Chief Operating Officer at United Utilities, said: “We have ramped up our operations as this dry spell continues to manage water resources and get water to where it is needed.
“With local reservoir levels lower than we would expect for the time of the year, we can all play our part to make sure there’s enough water for people, wildlife and the environment.”
