A third-year nursing student and South Ribble Scouts volunteer has been nominated for the National Diversity Awards 2025.

Shona Thompson has been recognised for her outstanding advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusive healthcare.

As a transgender woman who has fully transitioned, Shona has firsthand experience of the challenges many in the LGBTQIA+ community face, particularly in navigating healthcare systems.

Shona said: “It’s an honour to be recognised, but my true passion lies in making a real difference for LGBTQIA+ individuals. 

“Everyone deserves access to healthcare that is respectful, inclusive, and free from discrimination. I hope to continue advocating for meaningful change and inspiring others in the community.”

Throughout her nursing studies, Shona has advocated for improving healthcare, accessibility and equality while educating others on the importance of inclusivity. Beyond her studies she also raises awareness of the issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.

Shona is also a scouts volunteer in South Ribble, contributing to scouting’s mission of equipping young people with skills for life while fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
