Lancashire Police say the motorway is ‘likely to be closed for some time’.
Highways England North West said the North West Air Ambulance were called to the scene.
Northbound traffic was being held to allow the air ambulance to land.
The closure is in force for the southbound side where the crash took place.
Delays of up to an hour are reported on the M6 southbound from Junction 35 onwards.
Traffic England was showing delays back to Forton Services on the northbound side but these are now cleared.
The current reopening time for the southbound side is not expected to be until late evening on Sunday due to current estimates on Traffic England. No official re-opening time has been given by National Highways North West as they say investigation work is continuing into the crash.
