A police search is underway after an ‘extremely rare’ instance of a man escaping from a prison van on the motorway.
Police received reports at 8.54am this morning (19 March) that Jamie Cooper, 33 from Blackpool, absconded from a GEOAmey prison van on the M55.
The van was taking prisoners to Lancaster Magistrates’ Court and the incident is reported to have happened close to junction 2.

Police are appealing for the public’s help in finding Cooper – who they say should not be approached – and stated they are taking the incident ‘incredibly seriously.’
A spokesperson for police said: “Cooper is 5ft 7in, of a medium build with short, cropped hair and is thought to be wearing a blue coat, blue jeans and black trainers.
“We know that this may be concerning to hear about, but we want to reassure you that incidents like these are extremely rare in Lancashire and it is something we are taking incredibly seriously.
“Searches and an investigation are ongoing, and you will see an increase in our officers in the area as they continue their enquiries. If you have any concerns, please do approach them as they are out and about.”
He has links to Bolton as well as Blackpool. If you see him call 999, police say.
