An accountancy firm based in Preston, set up by a woman in the middle of her maternity leave, aims to support local businesses.
Moxie Financials was started two years ago. The founder, Sian How aimed to ‘change the accountancy game’ and connect with small businesses.
Sian was on maternity leave with her second child when she decided the corporate world was not for her, working ‘every hour under the sun’ was not how she wanted to continue her career.

After realising small businesses were ‘underserved’ by accountancy firms, she set up the company.
Sian said: “I’ve worked in finance for 12 years and realised that small businesses don’t get that help to grow as much as big businesses do. I set up Moxie to bring finance into the 21st century – we’re a fun, approachable, high energy and young team – but we also know business. We work with everyone from start-ups to recruiters and retail businesses.
“We know that larger firms can gatekeep information whereas we want to share our knowledge and educate people so that they feel empowered to run and grow their business and offer support in what can be a lonely road in running your own business!
“I also want to make people aware that there’s a lot of money out there for small businesses. It’s government backed. People should access it, because it’s there, but they don’t know how to.”

Balancing being a mum of a toddler and newborn, running a business and managing employees, Lauren Millington, operations manager described Sian as a ‘powerhouse’. The business gives employees the flexibility to work, whilst also looking after their family.
Sian said: “Sometimes I work in Costa with my baby, other days I work from home. Parents all need that flexibility and I want to prove that women can do both. We don’t have to do one or the other, we can work and be a mother.”
Lauren added: “She [Sian] really cares about what she is doing and really wants her clients to do well and to see their businesses grow and I see it every day through her work and her passion to make a difference.”
