A much-loved Muay Thai gym in Preston is aiming to raise as much money as they can to refurbish their new home.

Johnson’s Muay Thai has recently had planning permission passed for the second floor of Maitland Mill as a new home, after moving location due to increasing rent.

However, the 170 year old building, which is just over half a mile away from the gym’s current home, is in need of repair.

Alice Johnson, founder and coach at Johnson’s Muay Thai said: “Our gym is like a home for many people. A place they can go to relieve stress, socialise, exercise and for some even compete to the highest level.

“But for us to continue our great work, we need financial support to create a training facility that hosts all our members. And any future potential members!

“At the moment we have outgrown our current facility. Meaning we have to limit the numbers in our classes. Right now, we are stopping others from accessing our classes. More space and new equipment means more opportunities to expand the club and reach more people in the community.”

With a fundraising target of £20,000, the money would go towards new lighting, toilets, an addition of changing rooms, showers and a disabled toilet.

They also plan to start up a new youth club in the building, with the hope of being able to price a recreational area with a TV and pool table.

Alice added: “The youth club was actually the idea of the juniors who train with us. They love being at the gym so much, that they want more reasons to attend.

“It’s an honour for us that these young people trust us to guide them, in not only Muay Thai but their daily lives.

“We recently started a man’s club, to support men’s mental health. A cause close to everyone’s hearts. Another great use for our recreational area.”

So far, the team have raised just over £1,000. You can donate to their GoFundMe page here.
