Last month the St. Bernard’s Larches and Savick Community Hub took part in their first-ever community project.

Anji, the Fire Brigade Cadets Preston Central 86 team leader contacted Emma Caffrey who runs the hub, about a youth-led initiative.

Emma shared her strong desire to support mental health awareness in the community which inspired the idea to dedicate a wall to mental health quotes, while the corridor wall could feature designs chosen by the cadets.

Over two weeks the cadets painted the murals as well as helping with various other tasks around the community.

Halle, a 19-year-old cadet said: “I’ve been helping my team with mapping out the mural for the wall, I really enjoyed being a part of the project, it has helped my confidence.”

In addition to working on the murals, the cadets assisted the Penwortham and Larches Clothing Hub by sorting clothes, supported Ashton Food Aid by bringing in deliveries, and even participated in a community litter pick with the local councillor, Community Gateway, and the police.

As a token of appreciation, the cadets did a leaflet promoting what’s on in the hub and went out into the community delivering them.

Emma Caffrey said: “I have enjoyed working with the young adults even nicknaming one of the lads St. Bernards very own ‘Banksy!’

“They were so helpful and have definitely brightened up the hub. We would definitely invite them back to the community hub in the future.”
