A committee of volunteers that has transformed the fortunes of a Fulwood park is on the lookout for a new chairman or chairwoman.

Friends of Conway Park oversees and maintains the playing field and play area which sits off Conway Drive, Fulwood, and is also home to Cadley Football Club.

Formed in May 2015, its chairman since then has been Geoff Rand who, after a decade of dedication, has decided it is time to step aside.

In that time, Friends of Conway Park has raised over £172,000 through grants and other fundraising. This has contributed to improvements such as new playground equipment and drainage, additional trees, benches, signposts and bins and construction of new paths and wildflower planting areas.

Geoff said: “I have done 10 years as chairman and have enjoyed every minute of it. However, the time has come to step aside and allow someone with new energy to come in. It is always beneficial to bring someone in with that new spark.”

The park was created in 1967 and is owned by Preston City Council, which is one of the key relationships which the committee chair needs to manage, said Geoff. Although it is council-owned, the developments on the park have been down to the relentless fundraising drive of volunteers.

Geoff added: “When we formed a decade ago it was clear the park had received no attention for a long time and there was also no money to spend. Therefore, we set about fundraising and made ourselves know as a committee.”

With the committee chairperson needing to dedicate a couple of hours a week to role, according to Geoff, Friends of Conway Park hopes that someone will step forward. They meet every two to three months and the chairperson is the chief liaison between the group and Preston City Council parks department.
