A spokesperson for the Fulwood-headquartered club said: “John, father of Phil and Richard Crayston, was an avid supporter of Hoppers for a number of years and a very well-known character about the club, along with wife Pam.

“He followed and supported “my boys” religiously throughout the late 80’s and 90’s. Phil was a very successful 1st XV captain for a number of seasons, with Richard becoming a permanent fixture in the front row. During this time, John was the first XV team manager and became an integral and much-loved member of the team.

“His experience as a detective with Lancashire Constabulary also stood him in good stead when he assumed the role of tour standards and ethics champion during 1994 Canada Tour – tough gig!

“Phil and Rich’s achievements gave John an immense sense of pride and satisfaction.

“He was universally loved and will be sorely missed by the Hoppers’ family.

“Sincerest condolences to Philip, Richard and their families.”
