Review: Does the Heymac from this new Preston eatery beat that well-known classic?

Heyman Food Express on Fishergate, Preston

Heyman Food Express on Fishergate in Preston city centre opened its doors in December and is brought to the city by influencer Heyman Food Reviews who has a strong following on Instagram and TikTok. With Heyman Food Arcades in Southall and Nine Elms, Preston is the first northern venture for Heyman. I went along with my colleague and friend Caroline on our lunch break.

Walking through the doors, the place is small with two, four-seater tables available if you want to sit in. It’s mainly a takeaway so we decided we’d take ours back to our office’s breakout room. The menu was on a screen behind the counter and the Heymac immediately jumped out at me claiming it was “probably even better than the well-known classic”.

We got a Heymac meal with a side of coleslaw (£7.49) from the Signature Angus Beef Burger section and a Classic Buttermilk meal with a side of Nashville Chicken (£8.49) from the Signature Chicken Burgers section. As we had decided to share the burgers, they kindly cut them in half for us. Each meal came with fries and a drink, I chose Orange Soda (Kel loves it), and Caroline picked the Heyman Cola Zero.

So… Was the Heymac better than the well-known classic? Oh yes, it certainly was. It was meatier and made with better quality meat, juicier, more flavourful and bigger. It beats Maccy D’s hands down. I was expecting a little more from the coleslaw as it tasted like your standard supermarket coleslaw; maybe my coleslaw expectations are too high? The fries were just fries, and you can’t go wrong with well-cooked fries. The Buttermilk Chicken was crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside, again bursting with flavour and the piece of chicken was spilling out of the bun. Delicious, mmm mmm.

The side of Nashville Chicken was unfortunately slightly dry until you got further into it, but a nice spicy coating with a kick of heat to it. I do need to mention the chilli sauce which was offered along with other sauces when we were being handed our food. I don’t tend to go for chilli sauce as I can’t take too much heat but I’m glad I tried it; the chilli wasn’t too overpowering, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven’t mentioned Caroline much, but she mostly agreed with me (which my Husband should do a lot more), however she didn’t try the Nashville Chicken and would’ve preferred branded drinks. I thought the Heyman drinks machine was pretty cool though.

The person behind the counter was lovely and friendly, helped with our choices and any questions we had. We did feel we needed a spoon for the coleslaw and a few more serviettes as we all know burgers can get a bit messy. I don’t remember these being available on the counter, but I might be wrong.

The total was only £15.98 which for the quality and taste of the food – and probably not much more expensive than a Maccy D’s, if at all – was well worth it. If you ever fancy a Big Mac, go here instead. My lunchtime burger cravings are sorted with this place, so I’ll be trying more of the menu next time. A couple of the other Blog Preston team also visited and made this cracking video available on YouTube with some other food to drool over and try when you head to Heyman.
