Preston’s cold snap will continue with difficult travel conditions set to remain, according to the latest warning from the Met Office.

Temperatures fell below zero overnight on Wednesday (1 January) with many roads in the wider Lancashire network struggling with black ice on Thursday morning (2 January).

The new yellow weather warning from the Met Office is in place from 5pm today until 10am tomorrow (3 January) and covers much of the northern area of the UK, including Preston.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Scattered wintry showers will be replaced by a longer spell of rain and sleet for a time on Thursday night, particularly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“As temperatures dip below freezing, this will lead to a risk of ice formation on untreated surfaces, especially inland.”

At the time of writing, the majority of the UK, including Preston, is under a yellow weather warning for snow for much of the weekend.

The Met Office said that they expect the area and timeframe to narrow as the weekend draws closer and confidence in the forecast increase.
