Demolition of social housing in Ribbleton is due to go on until March this year.

Community Gateway Association started work in December at the flats – known as Ribble Heights – in Fir Trees Avenue and Fir Trees Place.

The housing association bought the flats, all currently empty, in March last year.

A spokesperson for Gateway said ‘historically the blocks had experienced low demand, high tenant turnover and challenges with anti-social behaviour’.

The decision was taken to demolished the buildings in Ribbleton although no firm plans have been made on what to build in their place.

Director of customers and communities at Community Gateway Association, Louise Mattinson, said: “The flats failed to meet the standards we require to provide high-quality homes. We hope that residents in the area, many of them Community Gateway tenants, are relieved to see the tower blocks being removed, as they were a persistent source of problems.

“Moving forward, we are exploring the potential that this piece of land offers to Community Gateway and the people of Ribbleton. While there are no firm plans to redevelop the land currently, we will keep the residents informed about any future plans for the site.

“This work will be completed soon, and we are pleased with the progress made so far. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during the demolition process.”

Work on demolition is being undertaken by Preston-based Bradley Demolition Limited.

Visits to the demolition site have been made by nearby Ribbleton schools as well as Preston Vocational Centre to learn about the process involved.
