Residents in one Preston area woke to frozen flood water after temperatures dipped overnight.

Met Office weather warnings for rain were replaced with ice yesterday (1 January) and with standing water left around the Preston area from flooding, roads and surfaces were a concern for the weather body.

Temperatures overnight were below zero in some areas.

One Preston resident was walking her dog around Ingol this morning (2 January) when she came across frozen flood water on Tag Croft.

Helen Mizrahi told Blog Preston: “I saw this and took the picture at about half six this morning. I live around the corner and was walking my dog. He wasn’t impressed and we took a wide berth.

“I’m not sure if the whole depth was frozen but it looked bad enough that I took a photo, especially on a quiet residential street.”

In the wider Lancashire area, a number of keys roads were closed this morning due to the freeze overnight.

The A56 from Rising Bridge to Huncoat in East Lancashire was closed while drivers were asked to avoid Hall Lane in Lathom in West Lancashire. Haslingden Old Road in Oswaldtwistle remained closed due to a landslip.

Matt Townsend, Director for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council, said: “Our highways teams have been responding to flooding issues caused by heavy rainfall and are currently attending a number of affected locations across the county.

“There are a number of road closures in place with traffic management and we are working hard to get these removed when it is safe to do so.

“If your area has been affected by flooding then we would advise to avoid any unnecessary journeys and follow the temporary signage if you do need to travel.

A warning for snow remains in place for Preston at the weekend, with the caveat that the Met Office expect the warning to become more precise before then.
