Storm Darragh is expected to arrive in Preston and Lancashire earlier than forecast as the Met Office has issued a new warning.
Winds of 70mph to 80mph are expected throughout Saturday as the northwesterly and notherly winds arrive.
A yellow weather warning for strong winds is in force from 3pm on Friday (6 December) but then upgrades to an amber weather warning from 1am on Saturday (7 December) and remains in force until Saturday evening.
The storm is expected to cause travel disruption and there’s a risk of power cuts and damage to buildings.
Jason Kelly is a Met Office Chief Forecaster. He said: “Storm Darragh is an evolving system and will bring several hazards, including wind gusts of up to 70-80mph around western coasts, especially from Devon and Cornwall to southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wind speeds in inland areas will be slightly reduced with maximum gusts expected to reach 60-70mph.”
Electricity North West says it is preparing for the storm.
Alan Astall, head of network control at Electricity North West, said: “Our plans are well-rehearsed and were put into action recently when Storm Bert impacted the region.
“We’re expecting strong winds and heavy rain over the next 72 hours and want to warn customers of potential disruption to the power network.
“Strong winds can be disruptive blowing debris into overhead lines whilst heavy rain can cause flooding and access issues.
“Our main priority is safety so if you do notice any damage to the network, for example damaged overhead lines or electricity poles, contact us immediately by calling 105.
“And if you or someone you know would be adversely affected by a power cut, you can join our free Extra Care Register for a bit of additional help and support.”
Heavy rain is also expected from Friday afternoon onwards with a number of flood alerts already in place from the Environment Agency.
A flood alert is currently in force for the Ribble Valley on the Upper River Ribble and Hodder covering the area from Settle to Samlesbury including Clitheroe, Gisburn, Sawley, Waddington and Ribchester.
And a second flood alert for the River Lostock and River Yarrow at Whittle-le-Woods and Croston including Leyland, Lostock Hall and Bamber Bridge.
Preston City Council said the fire garden event, due to take place in Avenham and Miller Park during Saturday and Sunday late afternoon and evening, was still due to go ahead as planned at this stage.
A spokesperson said: “We are closely monitoring the weather conditions ahead of the Fire Garden event this weekend, as the public’s safety is our top priority. If the event is unable to go ahead as planned, an update will be shared tomorrow afternoon. Thank you for your understanding and patience.”
