Reports came in of a ‘loud bang and flash’ but firefighters from Preston and Penwortham fire stations found no sign of a fire. The National Grid have now confirmed it was a fault at the Penwortham sub station which caused the bang.

Firefighters remain on the scene carrying out a scene assessment. Eyewitnesses reported seeing firefighters combing nearby woodlands.

The National Grid’s Penwortham sub station at Howick Cross is only a short distance from where the reports of the bang and flash came in.

There are reports of lights dimming across Preston around the time the loud bang was reported.
