The exact location of two new hospitals to be built in Preston and Lancashire have been confirmed.
Part of the government’s new hospitals programme the new hospitals have long been mooted to replace the current Royal Preston Hospital in Fulwood and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
The Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Integrated Care Board announced the two new potential sites for the new hospitals – one in South Ribble near the motorway junction of the M6 and M65 and the other close to Lancaster University.

No decision has been made on whether to go-ahead with either of the new hospitals and the proposals will be subject to extensive consultation processes.
Chief executive of the NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, Kevin Lavery said: “A comprehensive review of sites, including plot size, location, motorway access, existing highways infrastructure, public transport, planning and environmental conditions, has been undertaken to assess sites for their suitability.
“Whilst proposals are at an early stage, we understand many people will want more information about how the travel and transport arrangements will work for the new facilities.
“We want to hear about how our proposals for the two new hospitals on new sites would affect you, your family or people you care for. Your views will help to inform the development of any plans going forward.
“While the local NHS has secured the potential new sites, no final decisions have been made. It is important to emphasise that any such decision would be subject to full public consultation at a later date.”
The maps below have been released to show the plots of land the NHS is eyeing up for building the new hospitals on.
The land is part of what’s known as the Cuerden site, and runs between Stanfield Lane and Wigan Road to the south of Stoney Lane in Farington between Leyland, Lostock Hall and Bamber Bridge.
It’s at the western end of the M65 where the motorway ends as it joins the M6 and A6.
Known as Bailrigg East the land is situated to the north of and close to the Lancaster University campus.
The NHS says it remains committed to reviewing alternative sites, details of how to submit one can be found on the New Hospitals website.
