An expanded cold weather warning has been issued for Preston and Lancashire with snow and ice possible.

Temperatures are set to plunge in the coming 24-hours.

A previous weather alert – a yellow weather warning – has been updated to show snow and ice now coming in from Monday (18 November) evening rather than Monday morning.

The whole of Preston and the surrounding area is also now covered by the warning.

A statement from the Met Office said: “An area of snow may bring disruption to a central swathe of the UK during Monday night and Tuesday morning.

“The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain.

“As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.”

The yellow weather warning for snow and ice runs from 7pm on Monday (18 November) to 10am on Tuesday (19 November).

Temperatures are set to drop to below freezing during the early hours of Monday morning and drop further during Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

A strong chilly wind is also expected coming from the east-south east with gusts of 30mph during Monday evening and meaning it will feel like -5 or -6 outside.

The rest of next week will see temperatures barely above freezing most nights but bright and clear days from Tuesday onwards.
