A cycle lane sign looks set to become the city’s new ‘Fishergate Bollard’ after being sent flying for a fourth time since being installed.
The Maudland Bank pole was skittled sometime on Thursday evening into Friday morning last week.
The cycle lane sign is part part of a new no entry which was put in place to stop vehicles turning into Leighton Street from Pedder Street to access Maudland Bank.
The change was put in place by Lancashire County Council along with the new signage during June when the Corporation Street bus gate was introduced – as the highways team made a number of changes to side streets close to the new bus gate.
The cycle lane runs for a very short stretch of Leighton Street close to the city’s university campus.
A Lancashire County Council spokesperson said: “It is disappointing that a third motorist has struck this sign which is designed to protect cyclists and keep them safe.
“Our officers have visited the site and will consider if any further measures are needed to help ensure this does not happen again.
“We will also be asking the police to monitor the situation.”
“We urge all road users to ensure that they always follow the rules of the highway in order to keep themselves and other road users safe.”
A Freedom of Information requested passed to Blog Preston showed the county council has spent £22,640 installing the cycle lane.
The signs have cost £2,400 and maintenance on the site so far since installation has cost £575.
