Little Acorns was rated outstanding in latest inspection

A Fulwood pre-school is celebrating after receiving an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating.

Little Acorns Pre-School, based at Kennington Primary School, Fulwood, received the best possible rating overall and in each of the five areas assessed. Inspectors visited the pre-school in September and praised the staff, curriculum and children’s “exceptional” progress.

Among the many areas of praise, inspectors said staff promote children’s thinking skills superbly; children “learn about their own cultures and those of others through many enticing activities and high-quality interactions”, children learn about keeping themselves and others safe; and staff and parents have strong partnerships.

The report stated: “Skilled staff support children to make exceptional progress across the meticulously planned curriculum, which has communication and language skills at the core. Staff plan activities to spark children’s interest from the outset. Detailed discussions with parents help staff to find out what children already know and enjoy.

“This helps staff to build on children’s learning from the start. Staff promote children’s curiosity and love of learning as they expand their breadth of experience through interesting visits. For instance, children learn about animal care at a veterinary practice.  Staff promote children’s sense of self and belonging superbly as they adapt the nursery  environment to reflect children’s home lives and heritage.

“Staff are excellent role models for children, and they embed exemplary behaviour and manners throughout their teaching. Children quickly form strong bonds with staff, which continue long after they move on to school. Staff encourage imaginary play that promotes high aspirations and supports children’s self-esteem.

“Children confidently demonstrate their depth of understanding through interesting  discussions as they play. Staff skilfully extend children’s vocabulary, offering contextual language, such as ‘mechanic’. Children demonstrate mature levels of engagement in their play and learning, and are well prepared for a seamless transition to school.”
