Tributes have been paid to the 18-year-old and 16-year-old Broadgate pair who died in the Chain Caul Way crash.

Penwortham Priory Academy confirmed the death of Umar Mahmood who was a pupil at the school until 2022.

He also starred in the first series of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams.

Principal Matt Eastham said: “We are again saddened as a school to hear the news that Umar Mahmood, who was in the same accident as Adam, and who left Priory 2 years ago, has also passed away.

“Umar was a bright, studious and well-loved member of our school community. He had a passion for Geography as well as his cricket, playing for Priory’s school team and appearing in the BBC One documentary ‘Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams’.

“It was a privilege for us here at Priory to know Umar. He was a young man who was always considerate to those around him and who showed ambition and kindness in all that he did.

“It is of course with great sadness that we hear this news. We give our sincere condolences to all of Umar’s family and friends on behalf of the school, at what will be a very difficult time. They too, are in our thoughts and prayers today.”

Umar was the driver of the Audi A3 Sport which crashed on Tuesday evening and hit a tree. He died on Thursday in hospital from his injuries.

Back-seat passenger, Adam Bodi, died on Wednesday in hospital from his injuries sustained in the crash.

He also attended Penwortham Priory and was described as a ‘talented footballer’. The school released a picture of Adam with his fellow football team in tribute.

Both Adam and Umar were involved with the Broadgate Youth Development Scheme.

In a statement the volunteer committee of the scheme said: “It is with great sadness that we have lost two of our beloved friends and members of Broadgate Youth Development Scheme.

“Hafiz Umar and Adam were from among our very first members of BYDS.

“They played an active part in the youth club from its early days up until most recently where they participated in the annual boys residential trip.

“Hafiz Umar and Adam touched the lives of many within BYDS and the wider community with their outstanding personalities and character. With heavy hearts we miss their presence.

“They were known for their great sense of humour, confidence and authenticity which rubbed off on our other members.

“Hafiz Umar was an aspiring cricketer and Adam was a first-class footballer, both always willing to get stuck in. Their talents and participation will surely be missed.

“We pray that the Almighty elevates their status in the hereafter and grants their family, friends and associates Sabr e Jameel.”

The pair’s funeral is due to take place during Friday (13 September) from 3pm at Preston Cemetery.

A 17-year-old boy, the front-seat passenger, remains in hospital in a stable condition after the crash.

Sergeant Paul McCurrie, of Lancashire Police’s Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a collision with tragic circumstances.

“Two young people have died, and I wish to extend my sympathy to their families, loved ones and friends.

“We are investigating how the collision happened, and we continue to ask for anyone who witnessed it to contact us.”
