Preston Probus Club to celebrate 50 years of connecting retired people across the city

A community group based in Preston is set to reach a major milestone this year.

Preston Probus Club will be launching its 50th season of talks, lunches and visits, with the itinerary due to be released on 5 September.

Formed in 1974, and described as a ‘relaxed, friendly and informal environment’ it is a place for people to meet new friends and keep up to date whilst exploring the city.

The official anniversary, in November, of the club’s formation will see current member and semi-professional musician, Peter Wild, give a musical concert in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Preston.

Preston Probus is based at Our Lady and St Edward Parish Centre, Marlborough Drive, Fulwood.

Its original members came from Preston Rotary but over the years the Club has evolved from a men-only organisation to one that welcomes retired and semi-retired people from all walks of life.

Throughout its 50 years, the Club has remained an independent, non-religious, non-political group run solely for the benefit of its members who can socialise, listen to interesting and entertaining speakers and enjoy visits to local places of interest.

John Hally, the Club’s president said: “It is a really outstanding achievement for Preston Probus Club to have been part of the local community for 50 years and we are looking forward to being at its heart for many more years.

“The wide-ranging programme for this season covers local Lancashire history, travels in the USA, a glimpse into the world of a customs officer, a visit to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland as well as a talk from a former tiller girl.

“I am particularly pleased that the Mayor and Mayoress of Preston will honour the club by being with us for our anniversary music concert on 28 November. It will be a fitting way to mark the occasion.”

Preston Probus Club meets on alternate Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm, from September to April. Membership fees are £35 per year.
