Tributes have been paid to a man ‘who lived and breathed’ Preston North End.
Tom Lambert died on September 4 at the age of 68 surrounded by his family after a seven-year battle with prostate cancer and now his family want to mark today’s Preston North End vs Blackburn Rovers fixture with ‘one final hurrah’.
They are calling for a minute’s applause in the 18th minute at Deepdale and are encouraging both sets of fans to join in.
Stephanie Lambert, 31, told Blog Preston: “Dad lived and breathed North End. I know most say that but he practically moved me into the smaller home in the family home so he could house his memorabilia.
“He was such a big fan and a collector. He was also kind and generous – the amount of times he donated or auctioned off his collection for charity.
“We want fans to come together as a football family to give Tom one last hurrah at a place he loved so much. He loved derby day and he had friends in both camps.”
Tom was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 and fought fiercely. He entered remission but the cancer returned and he died peacefully, surrounded by his family, at 7.28am on September 4 at home.
He is survived by wife-of-37 years Carole Lambert and daughters Donna, Gemma and Stephanie.
His family also want to raise awareness about prostate cancer – which was caught early in Tom’s case and they say that allowed them seven extra years with him.
Stephanie continued: “He was a cheeky lad when younger and he didn’t stop as he got older – one low point would probably be Everton v PNE in 2000 round of 16, me and Gemma went with him and he was a little cheeky to an officer on the train and we all got chucked off in the middle of nowhere.
“I think his best moment would have been to see them win at Wembley (Swindon, 4-0, 2015) with his three girls.”
Stephanie, who manages the Preston North End fans forum social accounts, said the support from the club has been very welcome.
She said: “Peter Ridsdale messaged me personally when he heard which was so kind. Kane Kesler-Hayden has even donated to his page.
“The club has been phenomenal with their support and continues to help orchestrate all they can, which we are truly grateful for.
“He was a family man and loved his wife and his children so much. I couldn’t have asked for a better Dad. He was there for anyone whenever they needed him.
“He was a real fighter and fought so we could have more time. We will all be forever grateful.”
Stephanie and her family are raising money for St Catherine’s Hospice to thank them for their care. You can donate here.
