Disability Equality has announced the development of a new community hub in Preston after over two decades at their location on Church Street.

The National Lottery Community Fund has contributed to the hub’s development for the next four years, from 16 September 2024 to 15 September 2028.

The new community hub in Preston will be a space where disabled people can access a variety of fully accessible opportunities, activities and resources. It will be located at Bannister House, 23 Sedgwick Street.

Disability Equality North West (DENW) is committed to fostering a society where all individuals, regardless of impairment, are valued and can lead full family, social and economic lives.

This new development has been a key aim in their strategic plans for over eight years, following consultation with local disabled people, carers and support organisations.

Melanie Close, Chief Executive of DENW said: “Our community hub has been vital in responding to local needs and allowing us to work closely with disabled people to provide user-led services and support.

“We are incredibly grateful to National Lottery players and the National Lottery Community Fund for their continued support. This contribution will allow us to maintain and expand our support, helping disabled people live independently and participate fully in their communities.”

With funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, the hub will continue to offer some activities previously offered at the charity’s Church Street location.

They also aim to provide new activities, services and support, and it will be a safe space for local volunteer-led groups and organisations to meet, promoting a spirit of inclusion and cooperation.

The National Lottery funding will support new initiatives, including the creation of a trading arm for DENW, which will contribute to the organisation’s long-term sustainability and impact.
