The first widespread fog of Autumn 2024 could cause delays to journeys to start the week.

That’s the verdict of a new yellow weather warning for fog from the Met Office which is in place from 5am until 10am tomorrow morning (16 September).

Journeys times by car and bus could be delayed as a result and there is also a chance of delays or cancellations flights, the Met Office said.

The warning is in place for Preston and much of South Ribble and Chorley, as well areas of Manchester and Liverpool.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “It is looking like one of the first occasions in autumn 2024 when we will see more widespread fog developing overnight and lasting well into the morning.

“Some of this could be quite dense, making journey times longer.”

A fog warning from the Met Office is a relatively rare occurrence. The majority of their warnings tend to focus on the problems caused by wind and rain.

The Met Office had warned of fog in a new forecast issued on Friday (13 September) but also said weather is likely to brighten up across the week.

David Oliver,Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “In the wake of the front on Sunday, high pressure then builds, bringing fine and dry conditions to most parts of the UK for much of next week.

“If any rain develops it is expected to be confined to the extreme northwest of Scotland on Monday and Tuesday. There is a risk of some fog patches overnight and temperatures continue to increase, with many places a little above average by mid-week.”
