Clear-up operations on Moor Park are continuing as the BBC Radio 2 In The Park site remains for the next fortnight.

Preston City Council say they are confident the park will be fully restored following Sunday’s mud bath in the park as consistent rain saw the park’s surface churned up by the 30,000-people strong crowd.

Blog Preston understands many of the food traders were told they would not be able to retrieve their vehicles until the middle of this week because of the park conditions.

The city council said its parks team had a full plan for how Moor Park – which has hosted major events before such as the Radio 1 Big Weekend and the 1992 Guild – would recover.

Cabinet member for environment and community safety, councillor Freddie Bailey, told Blog Preston: “It was an incredibly wet day yesterday as the people of Preston can vouch for, but I believe not as wet as the south of the country! Restoration of the park has started and our parks team, comprising talented gardeners, will be working very closely with the event organisers over the coming days and weeks.

“The park will make a full recovery, it’s not the first time it’s seen heavy rainfall and lots of muddy feet as our ’92 Guild celebrations were a complete wash out and it survived.

“The park will be fully assessed as the event is derigged which is being managed by the event organisers, as it would be for any large-scale event. Some elements may be slightly delayed, but this is not out of the ordinary for an event of this scale. The park may be cordoned off temporarily into sections throughout the reinstatement process.

“The aim of both the City Council and BBC is to limit any damage to the park as much as possible and ensure that the duration of any disruption to regular park users after the event is as limited as possible. This is a contractual arrangement between the Council and the BBC.”

The city council said it is likely to take two weeks before all signs of the BBC Radio 2 In The Park infrastructure have been cleared from the grade-II listed park.

Speaking about the overall festival – Helen Thomas, Head of BBC Radio 2, said: “Radio 2 in the Park 2024 in Moor Park in Preston was truly epic – we brought the incredible line-up, and our amazing listeners brought the party atmosphere as they danced through the sunshine and then Sunday’s torrential rain.

“Thank you so much to the good people of Preston and the team at Preston City Council for welcoming the Radio 2 family to your fantastic city.”
