The River Trader barge looks set to stay at Preston Docks longer than planned.

Having delivered the giant transformer cargo needed for the National Grid the ship was due to head back down the River Ribble during Thursday (22 August).

But the high river levels being experienced – hitting their highest on record along that stretch of the Ribble – coupled with a storm warning for Friday (23 August) means the barge is staying up.

A Preston City Council spokesperson said: “Due to weather delays that have affected heavy lifting operations, it is possible that the ship offloading the large electrical transformer at Preston Dock, may not depart Preston before High Water on Saturday 24th August 2024 (approx. 3pm).

“While the River Trader remains at Preston Dock, the locks will be closed to all water traffic. Normal lock gate operations will resume once the ship has departed. Thanks for your patience.”

The River Trader cruised in the Docks during Wednesday 21 August attracting hundreds of people to turn out to catch a glimpse.
