A flood alert has been issued for the west section of the River Ribble estuary.

The Environment Agency put the warnings in place, suggesting that high tides, strong winds and large waves overnight may cause it.

The alert is in place between 11pm tonight (21 August) and 5am (22 August). The alert is the lowest level warning from the Environment Agency.

Areas most at risk include Freckleton Marsh, Riversway Docklands, Lower Penwortham, Hutton Marsh, Longton Marsh, Becconsall Marsh, Much Hoole Marsh, Bretherton Eyes, Croston Finney, Hesketh Out Marsh and Hundred End.

The highest tide is expected in these areas at 2am on 22 August and flooding is possible three hours either side of this time.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “We do not expect to see similar impacts from the high tide tomorrow afternoon.

“We are closely monitoring the situation.

“Be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.”
